Activity #1

On February 8th, 2012, our class participated in creating a Wiki for an assignment.  I enjoyed this assigment and thought that Wikis can prove to be very helpful and fun in a classroom!  Below is a link to the Wiki that I created:

The assignment was to find a person or event in history and research myths surrounding the person/event.  I chose the American holiday Thanksgiving, particularly the first Thanksgiving.

We were also asked to comment on the consequences of these myths.  Below is a link to my comment:

Here is a link to a discussion question I posted on the Wiki discussion board regarding this assignment:

  1. Creating a Wiki for the first time was a unique experience. The group members who presented the activity were learning as they each went along as well, much like a classroom teacher would do. it was interesting to see how this group responded to things that went wrong and questions that my peers had. Overall, it went very well.

I will definitely use Wikis in the classroom. I think that it is very useful to be able to view all of the edits that are made to a Wiki as the students move along. This will prove very useful to me because I value the progress that students make as they go and will assess them on the amount of individual improvement.

The one area that was a bit tricky for the Wikis was the fact that only one user may edit at one time. This may prove difficult to manage in a classroom. I definitely would not want to see any work lost as a result of this. I, as a teacher, will have to work hard to manage this well.

One lesson that I think will be a good use of a Wiki is to have students break into groups of 3 or 4 students, choose from a list of historic literature provided by me, and create an online journal of what it was like to live in the time period which the literature takes place. Each group member could take a different character from the literature and write from their perspective, incorporating aspects from the time. This would require pictures and links to critiques on the literature and historical research done on that time period. At the end, groups would take turns commenting on each others Wiki spaces. This would be a great assignment to view progress on and assess writing abilities, creativity adnt echnology abilities.
